Problems with VoIP Voice Over IP (VoIP) may be the next cool thing to have at your company, it will probably even save money. However, with it's use comes a whole slew of security problems, soome of which may prevent (or at least alter) your deployment of the service.

There are a number of security issues that need to be addressed: - preventing unauthorized people from listening in on conversatoins - allowing law enforcement to listen in on specific converstations - preventing covert use

The law enforcement article (link above) got me thinking about possible cover uses.

Because what we're talking about here is the virtualization of an entire communications service, we also have to consider the new vulnerabilities and the possible virtualized old ones.

While using a virtualized modem would be reduntant for getting on the Internet, you should still think about the idea of it as it might be used as a covert communications channel.

kernel notes

For more info about the kernel-multimedia series, check out:
 http://tmb.kkc.fi/Multimedia_Kernels/
  • If you want to activate realtime capabilities in the kernel,
 remove the line (if present):
   capability
 and add the line:

   realtime

in the file /etc/modprobe.preload and adjust the realtime module
 options in /etc/modprobe.conf by adding:
    options realtime any=<0|1> mlock=<0|1> gid=<num>

any: grant realtime privileges to any process (0=disabled, 1=enabled).
gid: the group ID with access to realtime privileges (group ID).
mlock: enable memory locking privileges (0=disabled, 1=enabled).
  • For software suspend2 support you need to install the "hibernate"
 package.

!! Attention !!

Beginning from 2.6.17.14-3mdv the autoconf stuff has been reworked:
   - we dont rely on /etc/init.d/kheader and /boot/kernel.h anymore
   - dropped all of the old autoconf hacks
   - dropped kernel-multimedia-source-stripped(-latest) rpms
   - introduced kernel-multimedia-$flavour-devel(-latest) rpms to build 3rdparty
drivers against (survives test: make mrproper oldconfig prepare scripts)
   - kernel-multimedia-source rpm does not include any autoconf stuff anymore
